Rockingham Planning Commission Brownfields Assessment Program |
|||||||||||||
|
In October 2007, the Rockingham Planning Commission received a grant from the U.S. EPA to inventory known and suspected Brownfield sites in the Region’s 27 municipalities. Brownfields are defined by EPA as, “real property where redevelopment, reuse, or expansion is complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.” The presence or perception of contamination due to a previous use often leads to properties being underutilized. The grant from EPA is to be used to assess sites contaminated by hazardous substances. Selected sites from the inventory will be assessed to determine the nature and extent of contamination. Inventory and Assessment are the first steps toward re-use of abandoned or under-used properties. An Advisory Committee has been established from local government and other organizations with an interest in Browfields clean-up and re-development to guide the Planning Commission’s work. Consultants have been retained to conduct environmental assessments. For more information on the RPC’s Brownfields Assessment Program, please contact Theresa Walker at the RPC, 603-778-0885, or theresawalker@comcast.net.
